The biochemistry course aims to give the student, an understanding of the basic principles of structure and function of various chemical elements that constitute living cells.
The course is structured into three distinct portions in order to provide a logical approach to the subject: i), the nature of bio-molecules n) the study of synthesis, breakdown and biological function of essential bio- molecules iii). the understanding of chemical and molecular processes which form the basis of health and disease.
Practicals in the laboratory are selected to assist in elucidating the concepts discussed in lectures and seminars. The student will be introduced to the methods of biochemical analysis by various techniques used for separation, identification and measurement of bio-molecules relevant to clinical sciences. The student will also be introduced to the concept of chemical pathology, when measurement of bio-molecules are used for diagnosis and monitoring of disease states.
